The Instructor (Part-time) will be responsible for reporting to the Groups Director and IROEC leadership.  This position is primarily responsible for providing a high quality program and great customer service in our academic, recreational, and leadership programs.

 Primary responsibilities:

  • Arrive to shift on time, prepared to work, and stay through completion of tasks. Take assigned break times.
  • Complete job training in order to facilitate program in each area required. This includes new staff training, shadow/observation training as needed, and refresher training as dictated by IROEC Leadership.
  • Will be trained to teach subjects and activities using experiential educational methods for: archery, BB gun, aquatics lookout, zip line, high ropes course, climbing tower, teambuilding initiatives, ecology and geology hikes, astronomy, and life, physical, earth science subjects aligned with NGSS and Common Core educational standards.
  • Follow a process to track program maintenance, repair, and inventory as directed by Area and Program Leads.
  • Ensure that safety and protocol are followed in accordance to American Camp Association and Boy Scouts of America.

In communications:

  • Establish sound working relationships with staff to provide a high quality program and friendly customer service.
  • Familiar with BSA and Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Operations.

In relations with the staff:

  • Work closely with the Area Lead, Program Leads, and Directors to support overall program.


  • Must be able to stand outside for long periods of time, and able to withstand exposure to heat, cold, and wind.
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and lift objects and equipment up to 35 lbs.
  • Must be able to successfully demonstrate proper and safe operation of council-owned utility vehicles and follow all vehicle procedures and policy laid out in signed agreement (if eligible).
  • Understand and follow protocol for emergency situations at all IROEC program areas.
  • Communicate requests for additional training opportunities (such as in-service) to Area Leads or Program Lead.
  • Maintain a climate that attracts and motivates a diverse staff of top qualified people.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Education and Qualifications:

  • Experience in operations of camp program setting, displaying a flexible and enthusiastic demeanor at all times.
  • Current certification in Red Cross Adult & Pediatric CPR/First Aid/AED.
  • Desired: current experience or certifications in archery, aquatics, experiential education, climbing wall, challenge course, zip line, and/or shooting sports.
  • Organized and committed to follow through.
  • Customer oriented.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work in an unstructured environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Desired: Bilingual
