The mission of The Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center is to serve all youth of Orange County by providing quality outdoor educational programs that instill in them an appreciation of the outdoors and the environment, teach effective teamwork, instruct about the cultural history of Orange County and provide access to the natural resources of the surrounding areas.

This 210-acre outdoor education center, owned and operated by the Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America, is located in Orange, California and accessible through Irvine Regional Park. The Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center (IROEC) features half-day through five-day academic and recreational programming. Our hands-on approach to outdoor education allows participants to explore the outdoors and science while developing creativity, leadership skills and a respect for the environment.

This position is primarily responsible for overseeing the health and safety of students grades 5-12, in shared overnight bunkhouse accommodations during an academic field trip. This position is a part-time, non-exempt, temporary position. This position will report to the Executive Director through the Schools Director.

Primary responsibilities: 

  • Willing to work 1-4 nights per week in the months of September June, beginning shift at 8:30 pm and departing shift the following morning no earlier than 8:00 am
  • Work with a second adult (staff member or school teacher) to monitor a bunkhouse during the night and respond to emergency situations which may arise
  • Supervise up to 48 students at a time (same gender as the adult gender)
  • Follow established disciplinary protocols for student behavior management and communicate in a timely manner to a member of school program's leadership so teachers can be kept informed
  • Facilitate timing of evening procedures getting ready for bed, enforce quiet hours, and facilitate students waking up on time and arriving at breakfast
  • Assist medical officers in reaching all students needing nighttime medication delivery
  • Maintain awareness of and adhere to policies put in place to maintain privacy of youth and adults in bunkhouse
  • Counsel and empathize with students who are "missing home," working to find solutions which ensure students stay for their full camp experience
  • Comfortable leading songs, skits, and large group games for the morning assembly
  • Ensure that safety and protocol are followed in accordance to American Camp Association and Boy Scouts of America. 

In communications:

  • Collaborates, communicates and participates as a member of the IROEC site team utilizing appropriate verbal and nonverbal interactions.
  • Become familiar with Boy Scouts of America and Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education operations. 

In relations with the staff: 

  • Work closely with Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center and Orange County Boy Scouts of America staff to support overall operation. 


  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to hike and move around on unsaved surfaces while being in outdoors for extended periods of time.
  • Able to work and stay overnight in an outdoor environment that is subject to elements such as wind, dust, rain, and heat.
  • Other duties as assigned this is camp life every member of our staff team is expected to pitch in and get tasks done. 

Education and Qualifications:

  • Red Cross certification in Adult and Pediatric CPR/First Aid and AED (required)
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Experience interacting with youth ages 10-18 as a leader (babysitter, coach, peer leader, etc. - recommended but not required)
  • Enthusiasm for completing mission-based work every day, serving as a positive role model for youth interacted with as well as your peers and colleagues.
  • Registration as an Adult Member of the Boy Scouts of America and agreement to emulate the Boy Scouts of America Scout Oath and Law each and every day (completed upon hiring).
  • Ability to convey requests and communication to peers and managers in professional and effective ways.
  • Bi-lingual (recommended but not required)
