The Program Lead-Recreation will report directly to the Leadership and Youth Development Director of the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center.  This position is primarily responsible for providing a high quality program and great customer service in our recreational and leadership programs by supporting all staff in Aquatics, Shooting Sports, and Adventure Hill.

 Primary responsibilities:

  • Ability to be present on site to oversee scheduled weekend programs (Fri-Sun) during 5 day work week; strongly preferred to live on site during contract period.
  • Create staff schedules and ensure employees are completing scheduled shifts, and taking required breaks.
  • Collaborate with Area Leads and other program managers to ensure effective and efficient staff trainings are planned, executed, and followed through on for 40-50 Instructor staff throughout the year.
  • Maintain a process to track inventory and chart repairs of equipment for program areas, and clearly communicate necessary orders to be placed to the Leadership and Youth Development Director in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that safety and protocol are followed in accordance to American Camp Association and Boy Scouts of America.

 In communications:

  • Establish sound working relationships with staff to provide a high quality program and friendly customer service.
  • Familiar with BSA and Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Operations.

 In relations with the staff:

  • Under the guidance of Event Director make and follow up on all weekend group courtesy calls pre-event.
  • Assist the Leadership and Youth Development Director in responsibility for the recruitment, employment, scheduling, training, and feedback of all Instructor staff.
  • Encourage staff development and education opportunities for knowledge and skill-building of program areas.
  • Maintain a climate that attracts and motivates a diverse staff of top qualified people.
  • Work closely with members of the other departments such as Food Service, Janitorial, Maintenance, and Administration to support overall operation of the IROEC.

 Other:

  • Must be able to stand outside for long periods of time, and able to withstand exposure to heat, cold, and wind.
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and lift objects and equipment up to 35 lbs.
  • Follow a process to track maintenance and purchases of program equipment.
  • Track and maintain updated log of certification level of each current staff member.
  • In collaboration with Chief Commissioner, provide direction and guidance for Commissioners to ensure guest satisfaction and proper facility use.
  • Generate weekend summary reports outlining compliments, areas for improvement, and general property and maintenance feedback from weekend staff and clients.
  • Generate duty phone schedule on monthly basis.
  • Oversee staff housing by guiding resident staff to follow living and use guidelines appropriately.
  • Input maintenance and janitorial request for work into Facility Dude application.
  • Complete monthly duty phone schedule and distribute to pertinent staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university and minimum 2 years management experience.
  • Current certification in Red Cross Adult & Pediatric CPR/First Aid/AED.
  • Desired: Current certification(s) or ability to obtain training through National Camp School or Association Challenge Course Technology for challenge course and climbing operation, and USA Archery or NRA for range operation.
  • Desired: Current certification or ability to obtain training as a Red Cross Lifeguard or Lifeguard Instructor.
  • At least 21 years of age and camp management experience.
  • Organized and able to complete tasks with attention to detail and timeliness.
  • Customer oriented.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work in an unstructured environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
