The Area Lead for Aquatics will be responsible directly to the Leadership & Youth Development Director, reporting through the Recreation Program Lead.  This position is primarily responsible for providing a safe and high quality program while delivering great customer service in our Aquatics programs of the IROEC.

Primary responsibilities: 

  • Must maintain required certifications and training levels appropriate through the American Red Cross to remain in good standing as Area Lead.
  • Supervise and train the lifeguard and lookout staff team to ensure safety of the facility's patrons and staff. 
  • Conduct Facility safety checks and report necessary information to management.
  • Maintain, take inventory, repair, and order Aquatics program equipment through communication with Program Lead.
  • Plan, implement, and follow-up on bi-annual Lifeguard and First Aid/CPR/AED trainings for OEC Staff members, as well as in-service and/or refresher trainings on a 2-3-week basis. 
  • Ensure that safety and protocol are followed in accordance to American Camp Association and Boy Scouts of America.

Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques
  • Have the ability to instruct, assign, supervise and evaluate lifeguards in the performance of their duties 
  • Maintain and follow an understanding of OEC rules, polices, and procedures 
  • Have the ability to identify hazards and unsafe practices, and able to make suitable recommendations for mitigation.

 In relations with the staff: 

  • Assist the Leadership and Youth Development Director and Program Lead in designing comprehensive and high quality training sessions for staff members regarding safe use of pool and waterslide program areas.
  • Be available to staff members seeking further practice with Aquatics program protocol.
  • Ensure staff members are taking required breaks during work shift.
  • Conduct regular observations of staff working at OEC Aquatics Facility and provide feedback to Program Lead.
  • Maintain a climate that attracts and motivates a diverse staff of top qualified people.
  • Work closely with the Program Lead to support overall operations.

Other: 

  • Must be able to stand outside for long periods of time, and able to withstand exposure to heat, cold, and wind.
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and lift objects and equipment up to 35 lbs.
  • Create and post guidelines for all staff to refer to and follow while Lifeguarding at OEC Aquatics Facility.
  • Understand and follow protocol for emergency situations at OEC Aquatics Facility.
  • Request additional training opportunities (in-service) to be scheduled by OEC Program Leadership.
  • Share ideas for future program development of Aquatics programs with OEC Program Leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Qualifications: 

  • Experience in operations of Aquatics program (required)
  • Red Cross certified Lifeguard/CPR/First Aid/AED (required) and Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (desired, or able to successfully complete course upon hiring)
  • At least 2 years or 4 seasons of Lifeguarding Experience (desired)
  • At least 21 years of age (desired)
  • Organized
  • Customer oriented.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work in an unstructured environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
