The IROEC invests 3-weeks of comprehensive training and ongoing refresher training in over 20 subject areas.  We are looking for candidates as Full Time Instructors who can commit to the best of their ability, a full school year availability for this agreement of work. All dates are subject to change, but reflect the most accurate timeframe the facility can project at this time. Successfully hired candidates are expected to be able to follow the agreement dates below:

Start date: January 28, 2019

Projected end date: June 21, 2019

The mission of The Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center is to serve all youth of Orange County by providing quality outdoor educational programs that instill in them an appreciation of the outdoors and the environment, teach effective teamwork, instruct about the cultural history of Orange County and provide access to the natural resources of the surrounding areas.

This 210-acre outdoor education center, owned and operated by the Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America, is located in Orange, California and accessible through Irvine Regional Park. The Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center (IROEC) features half-day through five-day academic and recreational programming. Our hands-on approach to outdoor education allows participants to explore the outdoors and science while developing creativity, leadership skills and a respect for the environment.

Primary responsibilities: 

  • Implement quality academic programs aligned with curriculum standards.
  • Willing to work with middle school, high school, and adult programming
  • Expected to work a 5 day a week schedule, based on needs of the property (could be any day of week)
  • Supervise a trail group of no more than 18 students at a time during daytime and evening activity programming, with exceptional attention to detail concerning students' names and locations while traveling around camp to activities, bathroom breaks, meal times, etc.
  • Be a positive role model for colleagues and participants.
  • Comfortable leading songs, skits, and large group games.
  • Counsel and empathize with students that are "missing home"
  • Ensure that safety and protocol are followed in accordance to American Camp Association and Boy Scouts of America. 

In communications:

  • Collaborates, communicates and participates as a member of the IROEC site team utilizing appropriate verbal and nonverbal interactions.
  • Become familiar with Boy Scouts of America and Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education operations. 

In relations with the staff: 

  • Work closely with Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center and Orange County Boy Scouts of America staff to support overall operation. 


  • Serve as chaperone in bunkhouse up to 4 times per week (overall chaperone schedule for all instructors is overseen by managers). Monitor a bunkhouse during the night and respond to emergency situations which may arise; facilitate timing of evening procedures getting ready for bed, enforce quiet hours, and facilitate students waking up on time and arriving at breakfast.
  • Lives on site during the Academic and Leadership Overnight Season (Fall and Spring) optional
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to hike and move around on unsaved surfaces while being in outdoors for extended periods of time.
  • Able to stand for 3-4 hours at a time.
  • Able to work and stay overnight in an outdoor environment that is subject to elements such as wind, dust, rain, and heat.
  • Other duties as assigned this is camp life every member of our staff team is expected to pitch in and get tasks done. 

Education and Qualifications:

  • Red Cross certification in Adult and Pediatric CPR/First Aid and AED (required)
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Science, Leadership, or Education related field. (highly desired)
  • Experience teaching (recommended but not required)
  • Organized.
  • Customer oriented.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work in an unstructured environment.
  • Enthusiasm for completing mission-based work every day, serving as a positive role model for youth interacted with as well as your peers and colleagues.
  • Registration as an Adult Member of the Boy Scouts of America and agreement to emulate the Boy Scouts of America Scout Oath and Law each and every day (completed upon hiring).
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to convey requests and communication to peers and managers in professional and effective ways.
  • Bi-lingual (recommended but not required)
